Stoholm Fjernvarmeværk (Stoholm District Heating) has supplied the town since 1968. Its consumer base has grown by roughly a third in a few years and it now serves around 1,100 consumers. Production still runs on a mix that includes gas, and that is the part the utility wants to design out.

After initially considering a biomass plant, Stoholm District Heating opted for a 2.6 MW air-to-water heat pump system. The solution provides the plant with additional capacity and high efficiency, while being simple to operate and integrate with the existing facility.

“With a small team, we need solutions that are straightforward to operate and maintain. The new heat pump gives us additional capacity while fitting into the system we already have. The hydrocarbon technology also gives us more flexibility in how we use our accumulation tank. And it is an advantage that our return temperature, which runs high at times, has no effect on how the heat pump operates — unlike what we see with f. ex. CO₂ plants.

The new plant will be built as an extension to the existing technical building at Stoholm Fjernvarmeværk. Three strong prequalified suppliers submitted bids, with aalborg hc systems selected as the winning supplier.

The same job, different heat

Utilities across Denmark are going through the same transition: gas comes out of production, electricity goes in, and the heat price has to hold. What changes from one plant to the next is where the heat comes from and when it needs to be available.

At Stoholm, the new heat comes from ambient air. In Aarhus, aalborg hc systems delivered the surface plant for Innargi’s geothermal facility in Skejby. In Hillerød, the company is the EPC contractor for a solution that harnesses the synergies between district cooling and district heating, supplying district cooling to New Hospital North Zealand (NHN) and district heating to the city. In Høje Taastrup, its patented lid solution for pit thermal energy storage enables heat production to be shifted according to electricity prices and system demand.

The Stoholm order is the first contract signed since the business became standalone, with further opportunities already in the pipeline. aalborg hc systems is also bidding on Kredsløb’s air-to-water heat pump tenders in Aarhus, where 130 MW is planned across eight contracts before 2030.

“Stoholm is doing what a lot of Danish utilities are doing right now: taking gas out of production and putting electricity in, while making use of existing infrastructure and keeping the heat price under control. That is the work we are set up for, and it is a good first order to sign as a standalone company. It will not be the last this year”
